Long Range at short notice
LRIT is an IMO driven initiative for tracking vessels over long distances and in areas where existing infrastructures, such as coastal AIS, do not penetrate.
LRIT uses the existing Inmarsat satellite messaging infrastructure to regularly retrieve vessel positions. GateHouse has successfully deployed this technology at the Marine Exchange of Alaska. At a short notice they successfully track at long range being able to monitor the vessel traffic long before it arrives.
