GateHouse and Inmarsat strengthen co-operation on BGAN Software Defined Radio (SDR)

GateHouse A/S and Inmarsat plc have signed a contract for a development programme, which strengthens the technological and commercial co‐operation between the two companies in respect to the BGAN Software Defined Radio (SDR) waveform developed by GateHouse.

The agreement supports a joint effort in bringing the complete BGAN SDR waveform, compliant with the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) framework, to the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS)program, which already has produced a number of SDR radios and waveforms. BGAN SDR opens a new path to establishing broadband satellite communication  on the move, and will provide beyond‐line‐of‐sight (BLOS) communication capabilities for military forces engaged in remote regions where BGAN currently is the only viable option.

SDR radio manufacturers will benefit from the joint implementation road map which ensures a fast track to developing a type approved Inmarsat BGAN user terminal.

Chief Scientist at Inmarsat, Marcus Vilaça, says: “We are very enthusiastic about BGAN SDR, as we believe it offers a wide range of opportunities for manufacturers and users. We are pleased to continueco‐operating with GateHouse on the BGAN SDR programme, and look forward to the successful commercialisation of BGAN SDR products”

CEO at GateHouse, Michael Bondo Andersen, says:”We are confident that the agreement with Inmarsat preludes a commercial breakthrough for the BGAN SDR waveform. The technology has proven mature and will significantly reduce development efforts and allow both military and commercial radio and terminal manufacturers to quickly bring unique communications solutions to the market.“

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a technology that enables a number of waveforms to run on the same hardware platform. To change from one radio technology to another is as simple as loading the newsoftware, the waveform, on the hardware platform. This means that one SDR can substitute a number of traditional radios, and thereby save space, weight and power. Ideally, the waveform will be able to  on any Software Communications Architecture (SCA) compliant hardware.

Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) is a 3G satellite communication system, defined and operated by Inmarsat. The system supports circuit switched and packet switched services with data rates up to  492 kbps bi‐directionally. The system is served by three geo‐stationary satellites providing global coverage.
